1. What about miracles?
God does not normally work miracles. He expects us to use our own human powers to make the best of our world, and to survive, as best we can, in the middle of the natural hazards of living. On the other hand, miracles do occasionally happen, for special spiritual reasons.
In popular Catholic tradition there lives a conviction that, in certain special circumstances, God may intervene. A person of faith prays to God in the certainty that the veil between this world and the next is thin and that God can act powerfully in our lives, just as Jesus did when he healed the minds and bodies of those who came to him for faith or for healing.
2. Why is belief in miracles so popular today?
The New Age movement with its hyped-up imaginations of the supernatural, loves miracles. Seeking miracles sometimes borders on committing oneself to magic. Read more about the search for the miraculous and the New Age.
One of the crazes of today is a trust in socalled "psychic healing" which is said to border on the "miraculous".
